Shootings in Boston Are Down About 20% This Year, Police Data Shows. Mattapan and Roxbury Still Carry the Most

Some real talk about the block, straight from the police department's own records. Boston police incident reports flagged as shootings came to 339 from January through September 2026. Same nine months last year? 426. That's a drop of 87, about 20%.

Go back further and it's the lowest of the last four years for that stretch: 462 in 2023, 374 in 2024, 426 in 2025, 339 in 2026.

But it ain't spread out even. So far in 2026, district B3, which covers Mattapan, has 101 shooting-flagged reports, the most of any district. B2, Roxbury, has 88. C11, Dorchester, has 53. After that it drops way off. E18 (Hyde Park) has 21, E13 (Jamaica Plain) has 20, and downtown's A1 has 10.

Quick note so nobody gets it twisted: these are incident reports where BPD marked a shooting. One shooting can show up in more than one report, and this isn't a count of people shot. Still, it's the same yardstick year to year, and on that yardstick, 2026 is running lower.

How we reported this

Boston Uncut queried BPD's Crime Incident Reports (2023 to present) dataset on Analyze Boston, last updated Oct. 19, 2026, counting records with SHOOTING = 1 by YEAR for MONTH 1 through 9, and by DISTRICT for YEAR 2026. District-to-neighborhood names follow BPD's district map. This counts reports, not victims.
